Data Insight: E-commerce Logistics 2020

Data Insight research agency has published the final report on the e-commerce logistics market for 2020.

The report contains figures and trends of 2020 that are important for the market. The data is accumulated with the support of the general research partner — IML, as well as other research partners — 5post, Arvato, Boxberry, Dalli, PickPoint, PIM Solutions, Yandex Routing.

According to Data Insight, the estimated value of e-commerce market in Russia is 2.5 trillion rubles.

Researchers report that 883 million shipments were delivered in 2020 — a 35 % increase YoY. At the same time, 65 % of parcels delivered in 2020 were delivered by the chains' own logistics services, 23 % — by logistics companies, 12 % — by mail.

The most popular delivery channels are pickup points and parcel terminals. According to Data Insight, in the 1H 2020, 68 % of all parcels were received through pickup points and parcel terminals. The market leader, Wildberries delivers 90 % of all parcels through the pickup points.

In April 2020, due to lockdown restrictions and self-isolation, the share of door-to-door delivery exceeded the share of orders delivered to the pickup points.

Data Insight estimates the total number of pickup points (with different addresses) in Russia at more than 50,000. This number includes classic pickup points (39 %), parcel terminals (34 %), and retail pickup points (27 %). In addition, order delivery is available through pharmacy chains and Russian Post offices.

The fulfillment market in 2020 is assessed at 27.5 billion rubles and 109 million shipments. Since 2018, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) amounted to 63 %.

In 2019, Russian stores sent 24 million orders with 10+ kg weight and 7 million orders with 30+ kg weight. The categories with the largest share of large dimensional parcels include tires and rims (here 95 % of all orders are heavier than 10 kg), furniture (90 % of orders are heavier than 10 kg), and goods for repair and construction (70 %).

In the first half of 2020, the average delivery time for orders from online stores in large Russian cities increased compared to 2019. In 2019 it was 4 days, whereas in 2020 it was almost 5.
