X5 RETAIL GROUP’S REVENUE INCREASED BY 18.3% WITH AN 8.8% FALL IN NET PROFIT
The Group’s revenue increased by 18.3%, reaching 1.532 trillion rubles.
The supermarket chain Perekrestok showed the largest growth, with a 23.5% increase in revenue, reaching 230.8 billion rubles. The same indicator for the grocery store chain Karusel grew by 1.7% to 90.8 billion rubles, and for the convenience store chain Pyaterochka by 19.7% to 1.2 trillion rubles.
The retailer's gross profit increased by 19.7% to 369.72 billion rubles, and the gross margin increased by 27 bp, to 24.1%. Adjusted EBITDA increased by 10.8% to 109.87 billion rubles, and EBITDA margin decreased by 49 bp to 7.2%.
X5 Retail Group’s operating profit grew by 0.7% to 58.154 billion rubles, while net profit fell by 8.8% to 28.642 billion rubles. The operating margin was 3.8% (down 67 bp), net profit was 1.9% (down 56 bp).
“We were working in conditions of low inflation and weak consumer demand, which was due to a lack of real income growth during almost all of 2018. Nevertheless, X5 continued to follow its strategic priorities: market share in terms of revenue rose to 10.7%, despite a slowdown in store opening rates to ensure balanced growth,” commented Igor Shekhterman, the Group’s Chief Executive Officer.
Comparable retailer sales increased by 1.5% in 2018, while traffic increased by 0.9% and the average check increased by 0.6%. In addition, in 2018 the company increased its sales area by 18% to 6.463 million square meters.
